HOT WEATHER TRAVEL TIPS
Summer vacation plans are in the works. Here are some important things to think about before vacationing with your pet.
1. Where Are You Going?
Traveling out of state or out of the country - bring a rabies vaccination certificate. You may also be required to show a health certificate, so be prepared. Be sure your pet is wearing an ID collar and license tag.
If you are going to an area where your pet may be exposed to internal or external parasites (worms, ticks, fleas) that are not a local threat, we may be able to prescribe preventative products.
2. How Are You Traveling?
By Car: Be sure to bring along favorite toys, food and dishes. Stop regularly at rest stops for fresh water, exercise potty breaks. Know in advance which hotels motels are "pet friendly"; a travel agent or Auto Club will be able to supply a list. Don't let your pet ride with his or her head out the window...dirt can enter the eyes, ears, and nose and cause injury or infections. It's best to keep your pet safe with a restraining device while driving. There are many good ones on the market.
Don't leave your pet in the car in hot weather: In just a few minutes, temperatures inside a car can soar to 120° on a warm, sunny day and to 150° or above on a hot day.
By Air: Check with the airline about their regulations and services. Check with our office for cage recommendations. Label the cage with your name, address, phone number. If your pet is traveling in cargo, ask whether other cargo on the flight may be dangerous (fumes from dry ice can be lethal); select early morning or late evening flights during warm weather to avoid overheating. Please don't even consider sedating your pet without seeing our doctors for an exam and consultation first.
3. Beat the Heat: Pets will stay cooler with a short summer haircut.
Walk your dog in the coolest hours of the morning and evening. Check the pavement heat.if it's too hot for you to go barefoot, it can damage and blister the pads on your dog's feet.
Plan for your pet's vacation needs now, while you are making your travel arrangements. Be sure vaccinations are up to date. Schedule a wellness exam; we can provide you with a health certificate at that time. Feel free to call us or come in to discuss any issues or concerns. Then relax and have a good time!
