Martha H. DeWees, DVM
Dr. DeWees received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, with honors, from Michigan State University in 1971. She has practiced in the Eugene/Springfield area since graduation and established the first Mobile Veterinary Clinic in the area. In 1978, she established McKenzie Animal Hospital and in 2002 more than doubled the hospital size with the new addition and renovation of the existing facility. The hospital was awarded certification as a member hospital in the American Animal Hospital Association in 1979.
Dr. DeWees practices small animal medicine and surgery and has special interests in Feline Medicine, Dentistry, Behavior and Complementary or Alternative Medicine. Dr. DeWees was named Veterinarian of the Year 2000 by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) for her exceptional contributions to and active involvement in local, state, and regional veterinary associations. She has served as chair to the continuing education committee for the OVMA for more than 20 years, has represented the OVMA on the board of directors of the Wild West Veterinary Conference and is an Oregon VMA delegate to the AVMA. Dr. DeWees was appointed to the Veterinary Medical Examining Board in 1998. She has been active in her community serving as president of the Emergency Veterinary Hospital for eight years, during which time she supervised the relocation and building of the new facility in 1996 and the current remodeling project. Dr. DeWees has served in every office in the Lane County Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. DeWees lives on a farm with her husband, Jonny. Her hobbies include flying, raising purebred polled Hereford Cattle, dog obedience training, and basenji rescue.
Matthew E. Fricke, DVM
Dr. Fricke received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in 1994. Dr. Fricke began practice at McKenzie Animal Hospital in 1995. His areas of special interest beyond general practice are Exotic and Avian Medicine, Surgery, Acupuncture, and Alternative/Complementary Medicine.
Dr. Fricke’s interests outside of the practice are spending time with his wife Katharine, daughter Lydia, and their cats, dogs, and bird; soccer, snowboarding, wildlife rehabilitation, and home improvement projects.
Dr. Fricke is a past President of the Lane County Veterinary Medical Association (LCVMA), served as an Executive Board Member at Greenhill Humane Society, and has been the Oregon VMA delegate to the Wild West Veterinary Conference and moderator chair since 2003. Dr. Fricke established the Complementary and Alternative Medicine track at Wild West Veterinary Conference in 2004. He was 2008 Vice President and 2009 President of Wild West Veterinary Conference. Dr Fricke has trained in traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation, CranioSacral Therapy, and most recently has become certified in Veterinary Stem Cell Therapy. Dr. Fricke has also trained in Alpha-Stim therapy and Low Energy Photon Therapy (“Light Therapy”)
Mary Arpaia, DVM
Dr. Arpaia joined our practice in 2003. Dr. Arpaia received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2003 from Oregon State University. Dr. Arpaia has a special interest in diagnostics, preventive medicine, feline medicine and surgery and client education. She enjoys spending her free time in the great outdoors.
Brooke Jacoby, D.V.M.
Dr. Jacoby received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University in 2008. She grew-up in a small town in Northern California and received her B.S. in Animal Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2003, before relocating to the Eugene area. Her interests include internal medicine, preventative medicine and senior pet wellness. She also feels community service is important and serves on the board of Pro-Bone O, a veterinary service for the homeless. Outside of the hospital she enjoys hiking, camping, biking and traveling with her husband and shares her home with two dogs, Brady and Lena as well as two cats, Izzy and Sidney.
